THE ORDER OF THE UNIBROW
During the last year of the last Century, a close group of women formed the Friends of Fashion, a syndicate dedicated to “inciting fashionable behavior.” Our definition of fashion varies wildly, fluctuates with our moods and often includes a sense of humor.

We dress-up at the Holiday Market in the Emerald City and invite people to join us and play. To provoke ideas, we have theme day suggestions, such as Leopard Colony (Leopard, not leper), Black & White, Purple Passion, etc.

An accepting bunch, we don’t care about your age, shape or size, but are thrilled when anyone dares to pop out of their fashion closet over- accessorized, costumed (why only once a year on Halloween?), and dressed to the nines (sevens and eights are good, too).
Three of the charter members of the Friends of Fashion have been told many times in our walking around lives that we bear “an uncanny resemblance” to the artist, Frida Kahlo.

On a lark many years ago, one of us decided to see what all the fuss was about and dressed up in the style of the great Frida. The response was overwhelming. People loved interacting with the improviser and an annual tradition was born. Now every year at the Holiday Market, a special “Frida Day” is set aside for everyone who would like to don their fiesta wear and join the merrymaking.

On July 6, 2007, some of the Friends of Fashion got in our gitty-ups and celebrated Frida Kahlo’s 100th birthday. A photo posted on Flickr caught the attention of Erica Gangsei, who works in the Education department of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
For the June 14–September 28, 2008 Exhibition of the 100th anniversary of Frida Kahlo’s birth, The SFMOMA brought together approximately 50 paintings spanning the artist’s career, from 1926 to 1954. They included the photograph of the Friends of Fashion on a special wall display of Frida Kahlo’s legacy and sent us invitations to see ourselves in the Retrospective.

By definition, not only is an Order “any of the nine grades of angels,” (remember, dressed to the nines?), but it is also “a group of persons upon whom a sovereign has formally conferred honor, entitling such persons to wear a special insignia.”
Well, nothing much confers more honor than to be formally included as part of Frida Kahlo’s legacy, so we have now been blessed by the Sovereignty of Art, which I guess officially entitles us to wear Frida’s special insignia, the Unibrow.

We’d like to return the honor and invite all of you out there who dress up in your own interpretations of Frida, to send us fabulous pictures to post in The Photo Gallery. We’d also like to include your tasteful artwork (yes, we will be the judges of that) which has anything to do with our beloved Icon to share with the world.

As an amusing postscript, Applebee’s Restaurant, located at 2300 W. 11th Avenue in Eugene, Oregon, decided to decorate with photographs of “local color,” and at least two photographs of the Friends of Fashion are hanging on their walls above the booths. There are other cool photos, many taken by Kimm Still, that are worth the trip.
If you would like to see more photos, the next page is dedicated to everyone who dressed up and came out to play at the Holiday Market.
